     When a traveler does research about traveling to Thailand there are always 2 cities that get brought up first, Bangkok & Phuket. Both of these places offer amazing adventures and the chance to meet tons of incredible people. The puzzling part is how they can be so similar but also so different. Bangkok is known for all-nighters on Khaosan Road including ping pong shows, ladyboys, massage houses, and raves that don’t end until 5 am. On the other side, Phuket offers all-night parties but does so on white sandy beaches and water so blue you might think you are swimming in Koolaid. 

     Deciding which city is better is like asking me if I like grape jelly or strawberry jelly. I love both and for good reason. Both of these cities have similarities but also humongous differences. The locals in both cities are friendly, welcoming, and helpful. Both cities are large tourist destinations and they can be a bit much to take in at first. The cultural diversity throughout both of these cities is quite astounding and will have you wanting more.

     Bangkok is one of my favorite cities in the world. It is large and exciting but you can also lose yourself in the culture of the city. The people are very nice and there is a 7/11 on every corner. These 7/11’s are not what many travelers would be used to though. The 7/11’s throughout Asia are on different levels than those in the United States. They have fresh sushi, healthy food, fresh juice, and an area where you can have an actual dinner.

     Bangkok is so large but can also feel so small once you learn to navigate the city. The tuk tuk’s are everywhere and it is very cheap to get around. Always carry some change on you and you’ll be able to get anywhere you need to in a matter of minutes. Uber is also available and you can even get an Uber scooter if you are feeling daring. 😛 

     Bangkok is a city of life and excitement. They have streets that are purely dedicated to partying. Perhaps the most well know partying road in the world is Khaosan Road. Khaosan road is in the backpacking district of Bangkok. The backpacking district of Bangkok is the traveler’s party paradise in South East Asia. You are guaranteed to meet other travelers that are ready to party into the night. This district is jam-packed with raunchy bars and colorful restaurants guaranteed to offer a different experience in each one ha-ha. This may be common sense but here is a fun fact: “The backpacking district gets its name from the many budget hostels that surround the area.”

Bangkok to Phuket

     Getting down to Phuket is very easy and there are many options to do so. Many backpackers take a bus down to Phuket from Bangkok so they can see the countryside. This is a great option if you have the time. However, some travelers are on a more rapid and rigid schedule and will need to get there quicker. To do this you can book an Air Asia flight and be there in an hour. Air Asia flights happen every day and you can get a ticket for less than 20$. My Bangkok to Phuket Air Asia ticket was 19$ with taxes included.

Phuket Thailand

     It is time for white beaches, full moons, and crystal blue & green waters. Visiting Phuket will leave you mesmerized. Taking a tour out and around all the islands is a must but prepare for day drinking. Every little island you stop at will be trying to get you to drink. The islands do in fact look exactly as you hope they will. Those blog articles and books you read were not making up how beautiful the place is. The watercolors are 100% real and not a filter. 😆 

     Another reason some travelers come to Phuket is for the Phuket Full Moon Party on Paradise Beach near Patong Beach. This party is an all-night event and you will be dancing for hours. They have been running this event for years, last time I was there they were conducting the 1000+ plus full moon party. 😆 That is a lot of parties so they have figured out how to make it fun. Always be sure to be smart, observant, and party with friends. 

Safety is Important to Everyone

     Places like Bangkok and Phuket have lots of police and are organized for the most part. However, this does not mean they are above corruption. I have seen crazy instances at night occur in both cities involving law enforcement. Both of these cities have what I would call “no-go areas.” In these more remote areas of the cities, there is always an opportunity for more corruption and crime. Remember to be observant and aware of your surroundings and you will be fine.
