💡 Section #6 – Secure Wifi App & VPN 💡 

            This section is going to cover seven topics regarding using a secure wifi app, travel apps, finding wifi hotspots, and VPN’s. I have personally used all of these throughout my travels so I know they are tried and true.

Travel Communication App

           Apps for communication are very important. Before you leave for your next adventure make sure to have the latest Facebook, Snapchat, and Instagram apps already downloaded. Furthermore, think about downloading WhatsApp as well as the Talkatone app. WhatsApp is a very useful app where you can use your current phone number and be able to communicate with numbers from all over the world for free while on WiFi. Talkatone is an app where you can get a free phone number. Having an extra number that you can use to text back and forth is always great when traveling. The reasoning is that you may not always want to give out your WhatsApp number because that is your actual everyday number. Use the other number until you are sure you want the person to have your real number.

Travel Mapping App

            Have an extra mapping app. I already spoke about this before above, but I will reiterate once again. Always download an extra mapping app because you do not know when the Google maps app will decide to completely shut down on you. This has occurred multiple times and I am sure it will happen again. This goes for the offline mapping function as well. I do not know how it can be possible but sometimes it will not load an already downloaded map. Have your back up mapping app ready, maps.me has saved my butt a few times.

Travel Reading App

            An app that can help you pass the time. Scribd has proven to be an amazing app. Install the Scribd app and get access to tons of books on every topic you can think of. It does have a monthly charge, but it is no more than a fast-food lunch and or a pint of beer at the local pub.

Travel Money App

            Money apps that you may need. When traveling you will meet tons of new people and often those friendships will turn into group outings which will then lead to bar tabs growing quite large. Many countries do not allow for groups to split the bills. For this reason, you should always have a few options available for money transfer. I use Zelle and Cash App quite a lot while traveling so I would encourage you to download both and set them up before traveling abroad.

Travel Video App

            Video apps can occupy time and or make for great hostel date ideas. Netflix and Tubi are both great apps to have downloaded beforehand. Netflix does have the monthly requirement but remember that every Netflix account can have multiple individual accounts underneath so just find a friend that has one and ask if you can use it as well. Tubi does not require any monthly subscription and has a funny section of movies labeled, “Not on Netflix.”

Using a Secure WiFi App & Hotspots

            Wi-Fi hotspots that have reliable connections. If you require the internet and you are looking for an establishment with reliable Wi-Fi, then look no further. The restaurants to spot are KFC, Starbucks, Burger King, and McDonald’s. These are 4 locations that offer WiFi all over the world. Whether you are in the UAE, Asia, Africa, Europe, and or the Americas you will be able to find one of these locations. 

Travel VPN aka Makes a Secure Wifi App

            What is a VPN? A VPN is an absolute necessity when you are traveling. Basically, a VPN is a “virtual private network.” It is a service that encrypts your internet traffic and protects your online identity. More precisely a VPN can allow you to use an ISP address of one country in another country. This can allow you to use websites that may not be allowed in certain countries. Another great reason to have a VPN is that in certain countries you are not allowed to access Netflix and other streaming networks.

          An example can be seen with the last time I was in Guatemala and everybody wanted to see the final episode of Game of Thrones live but did not know-how. Joshua to rescue and I was able to live stream the episode. I made a whole event out of it for everyone in the hostel who wanted to watch. Check out more on getting a VPN at NordVPN.
