How Do I Find Comfort Food Near Me? Eight Regions with Amazing Food

Food is a Universal Sign for Happiness Around the World

                I have met travelers all around the world is more than 100 countries. All of which had one thing in common. They all loved food!!!!🍲🥕Countries around the world have been defined by the food that comes from that region. France & Italy have huge tourist industries that are built upon the food their country is known for. In this article, I have written about a particular dish that I have found and eaten in each of the regions.

              Some of these food items will be known but I bet a few will not be known and one, in particular, might be a big surprise. The regions we will discuss are Asia, Europe, South America, North America, Middle East, Africa, Australia, and Iceland. 🙂 I know there are a lot of different opinions throughout all of these regions but I have chosen each of these because of the impression they made on me personally. Regardless of where you are located, you can always answer the question, “Where is the comfort food around me?”

Asia’s Best Food in Town

“Kebab”, “Noodles,” and “Rice”🥡

            Asia was by far the hardest region to come up with an iconic dish because of how large the region is. It encompasses over a quarter of the world. The continent is vast but there are some commonalities. Kebab, noodles, and rice can be found across the Asian continent but where they differ is with their use of spices. For example, people in Pakistan and India use more spices in their food then most other regions in the world. Chinese cuisine has rice as one of the most used items in china, and many other Asian countries as well.

          It is very difficult to pick a single dish out of hundreds of thousands of delicious foods, but for non-veg, there is no competitor in front of “Kebab”. This Asia dish has an origin from turkey but is now found all over the world. Kebabs are made with the paste of chicken or mutton meat and mixed with different spices. Noodles & rice had to be mentioned because there’s nearly no dish you can get throughout Asia without getting a side of noodles or rice. 

Europe’s Best Food in Town

“Italian Pizza”

          This decision was easy even though Europe had so many choices to chose from. There was no doubt that the Italian dish “pizza” was the clear winner. Authentic Italian pizza is a savory dish that is cooked over an open fire. Italian pizza can be traced all the way back to the 16th century. Another interesting fact is that Italian pizza is not served by the slice but by the pie. Next time you are in Italy be sure to stop by Sicily or Tuscan to have some amazing authentic Italian pizza. 

The Middle East’s Best Food in Town

“Hummus”

         Middle eastern people love hummus and their spices. The best food in the Middle Eastern region in my opinion is “Hummus”. Authentic hummus is a dish made with spices and peas. This is one of the best dishes found in the middle eastern region and it can be served with anything. Hummus is truly a completing dish meaning it will complement any food it is served with. An article published on Travel CNN listed hummus as the number 1 dish on CNN’s Top 20 Middle Eastern Foods. 

Africa’s Best Food in Town

“Shisa Nyama”

        Shisa Nyama also known as Braai is a barbeque dish originating from Africa. I had it in Johannesburg South Africa and it one the best African dishes you can try. The meat is barbequed and cooked with traditional spices that make it just melt in your mouth. Shisa Nyama means burnt meat. My Braai was served with some “Joolof rice” which was also delicious. This African dish blew my pants off and as you can see from the picture below I was not expecting the delicious goodness. 

Australia’s Best Food in Town

“Chicken Parmigiana”

        Some people are going to laugh at this and I completely understand why they might. I know chicken parmigiana is known as an Italian dish but I have eaten this dish in both Italy and Australia and the contest wasn’t even in close. Also, that goes double for eggplant parmigiana. The Australians just know how to make their parmigiana. The Australians make this dish with different spices and for some reason, it is 100% better. 🙂 I know there are some other dishes I could have chosen but the chicken parmigiana in Melbourne is amazing and this dish does have quite the history in Australia.

North America’s Best Food in Town

“Apple Pie”

         My choice for North America was very bias because I really love apple pie. I’ve tried apple pie all I have the globe and no one comes close to apple pie in North Carolina. North Carolina’s apple pie has a taste that is unmatched throughout the world. When looking at North American food history it would be difficult to argue that the apple pie couldn’t be the North American food symbol. It has a rich history that goes all the way back to George Washington who was the first president of the United States of America. 

South America’s Best Food in Town

“Ceviche”

        Ceviche caught me off guard for sure. I did not think I was going to love ceviche. In fact, I actually thought I was going to hate ceviche. 🙂 Ceviche is a dish from that has a rich Peruvian history. Ceviche is marinated raw fish that is generally served as an appetizer but I have defiantly had it as a main entree as well. The reason I originally tried Peruvian national dish was that someone explained how the lime juice that it is marinated in actually cooks the fish. I found this so interesting and once you try it you might not want to stop. 

Iceland’s Best Food in Town

“Hot Dog”

          The funniest dish choice of them all. First off, I gave Iceland their own region because they are in their own little world up there and I love Iceland so I gave them their own region. 😉 I could have chosen whale, puffin,  or shark but I choose the Icelandic hotdog. This Icelandic hotdog was chosen by Vogue magazine as the best food to try when visiting Iceland.

           The Icelandic hotdog is made up of beef lamb and pork topped with onions of all sorts. The majority of the time the hotdog will be served with raw onions. I prefer crispy onions but I watched tons Icelanders scarf down the raw onions and hotdogs in just a few bites. The Icelandic hotdog might make you rethink trying hotdogs if you are not the hotdog type. They are not in any way similar to hot dogs in the United States. 

Worldwide Comfort Food Conclusion

Each of these foods listed above has a place in my heart and I would eat right now if they were in front of me. Most people would have had a completely different list if asked for their favorite foods in these 7 regions and Iceland. 🙂 Each of these food has a certain level of significance to the region it was chosen from and I hope it will inspire you to try a new dish next time you are in any of the regions listed above. Now you have the answer to, “Where is all the comfort food near me?” Each of these foods will satisfy your hunger.
