Monkey Life & Waterfalls in Morocco

Traveling throughout Morocco involved so many adventures. Marrakech (capital of Morocco) was quite the adventure all in itself but we will have to dive deeper into that in another blog. The two things that stood out most while visiting Morocco were the waterfalls and all the cute monkeys that came out to play.

Waterfalls in Morocco

When you’re in Morocco, Ouzoud falls is a must do trip. The journey will take you all day but it is well worth it once you arrive. The Ouzoud Falls are the most magnificent and impressive waterfalls in Morocco and North Africa and the incredibleness can be seen as soon as you arrive at the top of the falls. The falls are located near the village of Tanaghmeilt in the Atlas Mountains which is roughly 93 miles (150 km) northeast of Marrakech. The waterfalls stand at 360 ft (110 m) high which is the highest in Northern Africa and the second tallest on the entire African continent. The walk down the falls is very pleasant (for most) and is surrounded by thousands of olive trees and little monkeys.

Once you get to the bottom of the waterfalls the fun can begin. There are cliffs for jumping off for the bold, beer for the relaxing types, and boat rides underneath the falls if you want to cool off a bit. This is an all-day event at the minimum and can be a weekend trip where you can stay at nearby accommodations that surround the falls.

Monkey Business

Who doesn’t like monkeys? Haha, well this is a hard question to answer. In South Africa they were mean and aggressive and in Malaysia they tried to steal everything. So, where they different in Morocco? Absolutely, these monkeys were some of the most docile monkeys I have ever been around. I didn’t have to check my pockets afterwards and they were never on the offensive. Macaque monkeys call the Ouzoud falls home and as long as you a patient and calm the monkeys will eventually come around you.

Bottomline

This is one of those day trips that people should cross the big ocean to do. It is full of adventure and you get to see nature at its most glorious along with some friendly and cuddly monkeys. Always remember that when you are in animal’s natural habitat that you are not the boss and in fact the visitor and must always keep aware of your surroundings. Mother nature can be amazing but also very dangerous if proper precaution isn’t taken.
