Lovers Paradise Starts at Bled Island Slovenia

Lake Bled Slovenia should be nicknamed “Lover’s Paradise.” Bled Island is set up as a romantic haven and could make any two people fall in love. The entire city surrounds lake bled and it makes it so easy to see the whole city in a single day. I was in Lake Bled for 72 hours and I saw nearly everything. During my 72-hour visit, I saw everything I will discuss below and more. You can go for a 3-day weekend and check Lake Bled Slovenia off your list.

Lake Bled First Impression

Lake Bled and its unmistakable island church may be one of the most famous and recognizable churches in the world. When you see the picture of a small church on an island in the middle of the lake you know what that is. However, do you know where that is? Lake Bled is in the beautiful country of Slovenia. 

Top 6 Site/Activities to do in Lake Bled

1) Start at Bled Island Church

Lake Bled was a place I had been wanting to visit for quite a while and it was well worth the anticipation. Lake Bled Church is a Top 10 European church to visit simply due to its uniqueness. Visiting the island church is an attraction that brings thousands to this small town every year. There a few ways to get yourself to the church.

First, you can hire a boat or gondola to take you across for roughly 15-20$. Next, you could rent a kayak for 10-15$ and row your way over. Lastly, and the cheapest (free), you could swim across. Yes, people do swim across and I watched a couple successfully swim across to the island together. However, It is not a close swim. The best way to approach the swim would be by going to the backside of the island and attempting it from there because no boats are launching from directly behind the island. The swim is several hundred meters so only attempt if you are a very good swimmer. The church itself was unique and worth a visit but like many tourist attractions it was absolutely packed and once you were there for 5 minutes you were ready to get back across.

2) Lake Bled Heart Photo

The romantic Lake Bled heart picture is one that many people want to do while visiting Lake Bled. I went ahead and got the pic as well even though doing it alone seemed a bit weird ha-ha. 😆  The picture is an iconic photograph and the heart location can be found down by the waterfront closes to the center of town.

3) Tobogganing

Tobogganing was my absolute favorite activity to do in Lake Bled. This is something that I think many visitors bypass and that is a mistake. Tobogganing itself was incredibly fun but on top of that, you take a ski lift to the top of the mountain and then there are some amazing picture spots to utilize. The entire activity was like 10$ and 100% worth it. When walking to the tobogganing park you can get a bit lost but that is part of the adventure. Locals guided me in the right direction and this day adventure was incredible.

4) Vintgar Gorge

Vintgar Gorge comes in at a close second to tobogganing but Vintgar Gorge is all about timing. You need to get off your bootie and get to the gorge before they open. Public transportation starts around 7-8 am and I was on the very first available bus and still hit a little bit of tourist foot traffic while going through. You can wake up at sunrise and walk the 3 kilometers to ensure you are first in line. Many people staying at the hostel did this and were first in line. The gorge is breathtaking with waterfalls and flowing water for kilometers. There are so many different picturesque spots along your walk. You will find plenty of picture opportunities. This is a 5-6 hour activity minimum from start to finish. You can catch the city bus there every day just look up the schedules online.

5) Lake Bled Castle

Lake Bled Castle may be the most contested attraction in Lake Bled. For the budget traveler, Lake Bled Castle may be a skipped attraction. It was approximately 11 euros for entrance, and I have to be real with you. I do not think it was worth it. The pictures of the island church from the upper level can be done at numerous hiking locations which are free and less crowded. The castle was interesting to walk through but I was completely done in less than 30 minutes and there were way too many tourists trying to get the island picture that I had already gotten from a free hike the day before. The choice of spending 11 euros on the entrance or spending 11 euros on 3 Bled cream cakes is an easy choice for some.

6) Bled Cream Cake

Absolutely a must! Bled Crème Cake was so delicious. You can get the cake anywhere, but I ended up buying mine from the mini-golf course restaurant that can be found in the city center. Nobody was there and they had bled crème cake, so I figured it was a win-win. The crème cake is delicious and only a couple bucks, try it.

Bled Island Wrap Up

Bled Island is a must-see city in my book. As far as expenses, it was not that bad. The same prices can be seen in cities like Paris and London without half the fun. The only critique I have is in travel arrangements. I would say that I think Lake Bled could be a better travel destination to do with a group or as a couple. I went alone and met some nice people at the hostel I stayed at but Lake Bled as a whole was not a singles town.
