While in Sydney Australia I knew I had to find a way to get to New Zealand. However, flights can be expensive and as I learned firsthand, it takes way more than 5 days to go from Auckland to Queenstown New Zealand. Auckland New Zealand ” Northern New Zealand” is astronomically different from Queenstown “southern New Zealand.

I only had 5 days so I had to make them count. I flew from Sydney over to Auckland and my first 48 hours was there. Auckland is exactly what you would expect from a large scale city. Auckland is not the capital of New Zealand even though it feels like it and it was the capital in the mid-1800s. Wellington New Zealand is the current capital of New Zealand. Auckland has a great nightlife, solid public transportation, and an overall good atmosphere.

If I’m being completely honest though, I did feel some male testosterone from New Zealanders at a few of the night clubs. Meaning, many of the men didn’t like us, foreigners, talking to the local New Zealand girls. The local girls were fun, social, and loved to dance so this put me in a very inconvenient position. However, the nights were fun-filled and I met a lot of amazing people in Auckland. The one sight I would say to see in the city would be Sky Tower. Sky Tower offers a great vantage point where you could see a lot of northern New Zealand. The tower is 328 meters tall and the 27th tallest building in the world. 😀

Next Stop: Waiheke Island

Waiheke Island was a very cool stopover that I randomly chose to do last minute. Waiheke Island is only a ferry stop away from Auckland and the departure point can be found at the central-city terminal in Auckland. After arriving in Waiheke Island I quickly acquired knowledge that could only be learned through experience. Everything on the island shuts down on Sundays at roughly 1 pm. 😆 I thought this was a joke at first until I started walking around and the town. I was able to find a gas station that was located a kilometer away and I got enough to enjoy the night. I was only there for the night to enjoy the beach. Personally, I would recommend Waiheke Island to couples that want a 1 or 2-night romantic getaway. It is not an island made for singles. 😆

Travel to Queenstown

You know when you say something in your head and it sounds great. Then while you are doing it you say, “What in the world was I thinking.” This is how I felt as I was attempting to travel to Queenstown for a single night stay just so I could see what the town had to offer. Driving through New Zealand is absolutely breathtaking. The scenery seems surreal and the beauty can’t be measured in words. The closer you get to Queenstown the better it became.

This reason I was annoyed was not because of the long drive but because I only got one day to spend in this amazing place. Queenstown and Auckland couldn’t be more different. It is like comparing New York City to Miami in the United States. Comparing the two is laughable because they are on different scales.

Queenstown is full of scenic hikes, waterfalls, mountains, campsites, seals, and penguins. Yes, I just said seals and penguins. 😆 If and when you decide to visit New Zealand make sure that you schedule at least a week to spend in Queenstown and the surrounding areas. I can assure you that you will find a different and eventful adventure each and every day. Just to show you that I’m not exaggerating below I will list 9 different places you can spend an entire day exploring depending on the seasons.
