Where to stay in Marrakech? Camels & City Life in Marrakech

Camels May Spit On You

Marrakech Morroco seemed like the logical choice because I was traveling from Spain. From the moment you arrive at their airport the tension is interesting, to say the least. They wanted me to get this certain type of credit card that allows me to put money on it and use it only while I’m in Marrakesh. It seemed like a scam so I did without and I’m glad I did. There were pros and cons in Marrakesh like any city but I hope I see a camel. Next, where to stay in Marrakech? What do I eat? & What do I wear? 😆

There were some major pros in Marrakech. The pros were the amazing people I met. The gentleman running my hostel spoke 7 languages and was not even 25 years old. It was incredible that he didn’t allow anything to stand in his way of being educated. He was super helpful and would give you the food off his plate if you needed it. The coffee was also very delicious at multiple restaurants that I tried.

Sadly enough that sums up the pros from me. The Bazaar (an open area marketplace where everyone sells goods) was super disorganized and the hustlers were everywhere. I constantly was watching my pockets and it was just an uneasy experience. Next, the shops would be cutting up animals, fish, and other stuff right in front of their shops. Blood would be flying everywhere with no sanitation. I’m well aware this is the way of life here but it was a shock.

Don’t Get Lost

Next, don’t get lost because everyone is trying to get a buck and they will send you in the wrong direction just so you get annoyed and then pay them for real directions. Also, if you stayed in a resort then I’m sorry you did not explore Marrakesh the same way that people who stay in the poor area do. The poor side and resort sides of Marrakesh are kept extremely separated and guards have weapons at the gates of every resort. Personally, I stayed in a hostel in the middle of the town and it was safe but also uneasy so I do understand why some people may not want to stay on the resort side.

Camel Life

Finally, we have camels. The idea of meeting camels early in my travel adventures seemed amazing but I assure you that it isn’t quite as glamorous as you might hope. The camels are not treated great and they are always tied together. You never really get to just be you and the camel. It’s like a train of camels that all move as one or not at all. However, this was early in my travel adventures and now I know. Marrakesh is a great city to spend the weekend in. After that, I would head to other amazing cities in Morocco like Casablanca or Fes.
