Uraguay is Just a Ferry Ride From Buenos Aires

Colonia del Sacramento ferry port in Uruguay connects you with Buenos Aires Argentina. Colonia Uraguay is just a day trip from Buenos Aires away. Anytime I travel and get the opportunity to see something new I will jump at that chance. I was walking around Buenos Aires on a weekday morning and saw these huge ferries. Next thing I knew curiosity had taken my feet into the receptionist’s desk. I walked in and asked the receptionist, ¿A dónde va el barco? . 😆 This roughly translated to, “Where do the boats go?” Afterwhich she explained I could go to several different cities in Uraguay including the capital city Montevideo.

This was awesome news and I think you can imagine what I did next. I returned to my hostel to pack a day bag and try to catch the ferry at noon. If you catch an early ferry you can choose to go over for a few hours or spend the night in Uruguay. If you are going to Colonia del Sacramento then you only need a few hours. However,  if you are going to Montevideo Uraguay then a few days may be recommended.

I was heading out to Lima Peru the next day so I was only able to stop in Colonia del Sacramento but it ended up being quite the rainy adventure. Like all travel adventures, nothing ever goes quite to plan and Uraguay was no exception. From the moment I stepped off the ferry the rain poured but I wasn’t going to let that ruin my trip. You will laugh at some of my pictures for sure because the rain was not cooperating.  😆

Are Day Trips from Buenos Aires to Uraguay Worth the Money?

Colonia is an extremely small town and can be completely walked in a matter of an hour. There is a very cool lighthouse, El Faro, to check out which is about a 15-minute walk from the ferry but that is about it. Some of the streets are color bricked and are very picturesque. This is a great adventure if you have an extra day and want to explore a little bit of Uraguay’s history.  😀  I would totally recommend checking out the links I’ve included throughout this blog to see if this can make your next adventure list.
