Sun Myths Exposed
Sun Myth or Truth #1: Individuals with blue/green eyes are the same as everyone else with regards to UV rays?
Reality: People with blue and or green eyes indeed have less protective melanin pigment in their iris, this leads to way more risk to UV rays.
Sun Myth #2: The summertime has the most UV rays
Reality: UV rays are present all year round regardless of the season and or weather. You could be skiing down the slopes and freezing cold and still get sunburnt. UV rays are always around so be aware.
Sun Myth #3: Sunglasses are not needed on cloudy days? 😉
Reality: Vulnerability exists all the time regardless of clouds, rain, overcast, etc. Clouds can dim down the UV rays maybe 10% but they are still there. Sunglasses can be worn anytime to help reduce UV rays exposure. Keep in mind some people are much more vulnerable than others.
Sun Myth #4: Young people are just as vulnerable to UV as everyone else.
Reality: Younger people, especially children under 5years of age, are the most vulnerable. As a person gets older, the lens becomes more yellow and naturally absorbs more UV to protect the retina. UV rays are cumulative so taken care of yourself at a younger age can help as you get older.
Sun Myth #5: Shaded lenses will keep the “big bad UV rays away.”
Reality: Sunglass tint has absolutely no bearing on UV rays however, it can change the amount of light that goes into your eye. Sunglass retailers can offer more information on this subject.
