Split Croatia was a city full of surprises. Traveling without expectations seems to be the best way to travel. Split Croatia was a last-minute decision and having limited expectations led to some really amazing experiences. Some of the attractions near and around Split included:

The Blue Cave

Croatia’s mysterious Blue Cave definitely made my to-do list while visiting. The Blue cave is in fact blue. The pictures were taken by me while in the cave. The water is this color supposedly because the sun reflects off the white sand at the bottom of the ocean which does a bunch of other things which then makes the water blue. 😆 I heard several guides give completely different answers so who really knows. This link may provide the answer if you can’t live without an answer. 

The blue cave which is otherwise known as the blue grotto entertains thousands upon thousands of tourists each and every year. The Green Grotto is actually a bit larger but not talked about as much. Perhaps the blue color just shows up in pictures better. These amazing works of mother nature are absolute must-see attractions for people visiting Split Croatia. These Croatian islands can allow you to truly step into a lost world of mystery.

Safety

Safety is something that I am asked about all the time and in regards to the caves, the answer is simple. There are no safety concerns. Now, I want to be clear that accidents do occur but for the most part you take a speed boat to the cave and the cave is not very large and there is plenty of room to move around on the boat and not hit your head. Finding a good tour company will only take a moment on Google.

When to Go?

The Blue Cave is extremely popular in the summertime (July – August) and the temperatures will get in your high 80’s and low 90’s Fahrenheit. This being said, it will make standing in lines much more annoying and yes the lines can be hours long. The line stood in was about an hour and we skipped a lot of people. The lines do not stop people from lining up. If you are really looking for an off-peak time then your best bet is to go sometime between April and October.

Getting to the Blue Cave & Blu Grotto

You need to use a guide, use a guide, use a guide. This is one of the few expeditions that I am against going off on your own. The majority of the time I’m the lone ranger and will go off the beaten path at the moment’s notice. However, when it comes to getting to the caves it is quite the process and you need locals to do so. There are plenty of good tour companies you can book through and like I mentioned before, do this right and enjoy your time rather than get stuck in the ocean on a kayak because you thought you could do it.

Is the Blue Cave worth it?

This experience will cost you at least 100$ USD and you will have to decide if it is worth it. This is the reason that this tour is not very popular for the backpacking community. It is super expensive when budget traveling. In my opinion, the Blue Cave was worth the money. My tour included the Blue Cave and the Blue Lagoon which were both unique experiences.  The decision is now in your hands. 😀
