Walking around Tallinn Estonia
Things to do in Tallinn Estonia
Tallinn Estonia First Impression
Things to do in Estonia? Where to start? Tallinn Estonia was exactly what I had hoped for. I had heard a lot about Estonia from other travelers and how it was like the gateway to Scandinavia. However, they did not tell me how much fun the city was. I walked everywhere including all the sites I will mention below and I always felt safe and had no issues. They have public transportation all around the city, but I like walking and it gives me a chance to see the city from the ground level.
Joshua’s Top 5 Tallinn Sites to See
1) Tallinn Town Hall
Tallinn Town Hall was the first choice on the list because you can meet there for a free town tour every day. I took part in the tour and it was adequate and gave me a solid overlook of the city so I could make more plans for my remaining days in Tallinn. The building itself is nothing special but its location is in the middle of the town, so it makes for an excellent meeting spot.
2) Kadriorg Palace/Art Museum
The palace/art museum was really something special. First, the walk from the town center to the Kadriorg Palace is a few kilometers so be aware. Along the way, I got to see some other attractions so I enjoyed it. As you get closer to the palace you walk through an amazing park that leads all the way to that beautiful landscaping you see in my pictures. I did not go inside to see the art because there was plenty for me to do outside for free.
Fun Fact: The name Kadriorg stands for “Catherine’s Valley.”
3)
Alexander Nevsky Cathedral
This cathedral is one to see from the outside but that is about it. The inside was closed off, but it is beautiful from the outside and it can be seen during your first day walking around the town. When you get to Tallinn you will understand why I say town rather than a city. Tallinn Estonia is a city but there is a distinct part of Tallinn called Tallinn Old Town where you will see a majority of the touristy sites. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is another stop on the free tour. All you need to do is go to Google and put in, “Tallinn Estonia Free Tour,” or hit my link and you will get all the information you need.
4) National Library of Estonia
The National Library of Estonia made the list because first and foremost I love libraries. Second, is because libraries make for great relaxation spots and they are free. Third, the library looks to be from medieval times and has a unique vibe about it. You can look at the pictures and see what I am talking about. It is a really large library and was fun to explore as well as relax after walking the city.
5) Town Hall Pharmacy
My final choice was the Town Hall Pharmacy. The Town Hall Pharmacy is a medieval-era style pharmacy that has items that were used back in medieval times. It is an actual pharmacy that will sell you aspirin, but it also is a museum where you can see some really cool artifacts of what use to be in a pharmacy hundreds of years ago. Stop by and you will be happy you did.
Tallinn Estonia Wrap Up
Tallinn Estonia was all that I expected and more. Tallinn offers a lot to do in a walkable town. You do not have to worry about transportation issues which is always a plus in a new city. Remember, Tallinn can also be used to get to Helsinki Finland as well as St. Petersburg Russia by ferry. I took a ferry to Helsinki and also took one to St. Petersburg Russia. These ferries are more like cruise ships. They have rooms, casino, movie theater and everything else you would expect on a cruise liner. Try them out and you will have another cool adventure to add to your trip abroad.
